The CO2RE intima is a safe, quick, pain-free, in-office treatment that treats a variety of gynaecological issues experienced by many women following childbirth and menopause.
The device uses controlled CO2 laser energy to the vaginal and vulval tissue – improving skin tone, texture, appearance, and function.
Who can benefit from this treatment?
CO2RE Intima is designed for women who want relief from the symptoms and signs of childbearing and aging in their vaginal area.
Although some women bounce back incredibly well after childbirth, the unfortunate truth for many is that they don’t look and feel the same down below. Following vaginal birth some women may experience laxity, change in appearance of their vulva, decreased sensation and sexual function, and urinary symptoms (e.g. leakage, unable to hold on to urine for long).
With aging and menopause, decreased oestrogen signaling to the vaginal tissue leads to “vulvovaginal atrophy” or the “genitourinary syndrome of menopause”. The vaginal tissue becomes thinner, loses elasticity and structure, becomes fragile, dryer, and begins to lose its usual sensation. This can result in irritation or itching, painful sex, bleeding after sex, and decreased arousal or orgasm. Vulvovaginal atrophy also affects the urinary system and may cause painful or frequent urination, incontinence, and recurrent urinary tract infections.
Following breast or ovarian cancer many women will experience these same symptoms because of therapies or surgery aimed to block oestrogen production or signalling to prevent recurrence of hormone-sensitive cancers.
Being the only CO2 laser device in Australia to treat both the internal and external genitalia, the CO2RE Intima can also be used to address dissatisfaction with the vulval appearance (sagging skin, pigmentation, and texture) for women of all ages.
How does the CO2RE Intima work?
The device uses fractional CO2 laser to create zones of ablation and coagulation, which stimulates subsequent remodelling, deposition of new collagen, elastin and blood vessels within the tissue. This leads to strengthening and thickening of the vaginal tissue, with improved elasticity and function.
CO2 laser is the gold standard for skin rejuvenation and is used world-wide by many gynaecologists and medical practitioners for vaginal rejuvenation.
CO2RE Intima has been TGA approved for the treatment of vulvovaginal atrophy, and the technology has numerous peer-reviewed studies to support its effect for VVA and vaginal rejuvenation.
In a recent clinical study:
- 100% of subjects reported satisfaction with the CO2RE Intima treatment and 94% would recommend it.
- 81% reported an improvement in sexual gratification
- 94% reported an improvement in vaginal rejuvenation, and
- 96% reported mild or no discomfort during the procedure
What does the procedure involve?
The in-office procedure is virtually painless, requires no anaesthesia and typically takes around 15 minutes to treat both internally and externally.
You will need an up-to-date Pap smear/Cervical Screening Test (CST).
3 treatments, each 4 weeks apart, are required for full effect.
During the treatment, the single-use internal handpiece is inserted into the vagina and the laser is pulsed while rotating 360 degrees. The handpiece is then withdrawn a centimetre and the process repeated until the entire area is treated. The external handpiece is then applied to treat the vulval area.
The treatment is safe and causes mild to no discomfort.
You may experience some mild redness, tenderness, swelling, or itching in the first few days following treatment, which can be treated with a cool compress or antihistamine.
You will be required to avoid any swimming, tampon use, or sexual intercourse for 7 days following the procedure.
When will patients see results?
Most patients treated with the CO2RE Intima feel and see improvement after the very first treatment, although a much greater effect will be seen after 3 treatments. A recent study showed that the effect continued to improve even 8 months after the procedure.
Some women may require a maintenance treatment annually.
How much does the procedure cost?
Each CO2RE Intima treatment costs $750, and a yearly maintenance treatment is $600.
Initial doctors consultation is $60, which is redeemable on payment for the treatment if you decide to go ahead.
Is treatment covered by Medicare?
Currently, there isn’t a Medicare or private health insurance rebate available for this treatment.
